What is a Clinical Trial?

Clinical trials, also known as clinical research studies, are designed to study the effects of medications and devices. Volunteers who qualify to participate in a study will be under the close supervision of an experienced doctor and compassionate clinical team. The purpose of a research study is to evaluate new drugs or devices for effectiveness, safety, and tolerability. This helps the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) decide whether the drug or device should be approved. Learn more about participating in clinical research by visiting our FAQ page.
There are four phases for clinical trials. All new medications and treatments must go through each phase to be approved by the FDA.

Phase 1

A new medication is tested for the first time and tested on healthy volunteers.

Phase 2

Medication is tested on a larger group of people with a certain illness.

Phase 3

Medication is tested on one group, and another group is given a placebo; no one knows who is getting the drug or placebo.

Phase 4

This is after approval and looking at other drug indications or treatment indications.
